The Victoria Falls Region, Zambia and Zimbabwe
Period: June
Livingstone is home to Zambia’s biggest tourism and study attraction-The Victoria Falls. These largest curtains of falling water in the world are also the 7th wonder of the world since they are also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They are also known as Mosi-oa-Tunya (the smoke that thunders) by the local Toka-Leya people. Although many of our learners may have visited the area before with their families and indeed will return there many times in their lifetimes, none will ever forget the lessons learnt and the experiences gained on this educational field trip. With its combination of learning and its focus on the Victoria Falls (its formation, history as well as economic and geographic significance), as well as opportunities for relaxation on a boat cruise and game drive, a shopping excursion, the field trip is a wonderful experience that will be long-cherished.
However, for the first time ever, to get to Livingstone, Lombe has crafted out a new path through the southern Kafue National Park via Itezhi-Tezhi in Zambia’s central province. The reason for this route is to learn about and experience Zambia’s first ever climate resilient road-Itezhi-Tezhi to Kalomo. This route takes us through Lake Itezhi-Tezhi on the Kafue River, Bilili hot springs and the various plant and animal species of the southern Kafue National Park. This very long stretch goes on through Dundumwezi before re-joining the Great North Road at Kalomo where we witness Kalundu and Isamu Pati. From here its plain sailing up to Livingstone where we again witness for the first time the proposed Batoka Gorge Dam site. Another first here is the legendary Victoria Falls Hotel in Victoria Falls town of Zimbabwe. Other tourism and study attractions in Livingstone are the Livingstone Museum, The Railway Museum, Maramba Cultural Village, Mukuni Village, ZESCO Power Station and Mosi-oa-Tunya Zoological Park among the many others. Bunji Jumping, White Water Rafting and Kayaking are the major adrenaline activities here. Other activities in Livingstone are Microlight flight, Helicopter ride, Elephant and Horse Riding; Walking and birding Safaris including on the Islands of the Zambezi River. The Choma Museum and Munali Hills are viewed on the return journey.
