Bangweulu Wetlands, Samfya Beach and Lumangwe Falls
Period: April to November
This is the central and most exciting of the Northern Circuit legs since it showcases Samfya beach on Lake Bangweulu which is the ‘hottest’ tourism destination in Zambia right now.
We once again lead on an expedition to uncover the local myth that the Chambeshi River flows from the northern highlands of Zambia into Lake Bangweulu and comes out the other side as the Luapula River which also flows northwards through Lake Mweru and comes out the other side as the Lualaba River which is the scientifically proven source of the Congo River. This river is the second longest and largest in Africa. However, it is the largest and longest river in Africa flowing into the Atlantic Ocean.
For the first time this tour does not only reveal Lake Bangweulu as Zambia’s largest wholly owned waterbody but, that it is actually surrounded by so many satellite lakes within the same place. We also discover Zambia’s largest island, Chilubi which is also a constituency and district. Then we also look at the Bangweulu flood plains and Kasanka National Park including their conservation value. Kasanka is home to the greatest Bat migration in the world. The other features here would be the social and economic activities of the local people.
Further North-East we visit The Lumangwe Falls which are both a gemstone and Zambia’s best kept secret going by their great beauty and unexploited nature. They are also Zambia’s largest wholly owned.
Other areas of interest on this tour are the Mukuku Bridge across the Luapula River. This bridge is still Zambia’s longest at 3 kms long. The David Livingstone Memorial, the romantic Kundalila Falls and Kawambwa Tea and Forestry are the other features.
